I’m thinking about umpiring. What do I need to do?
Taking the first step is often the hardest part about umpiring. Simply complete the ‘Become an Umpire’ form on our website, and we will be in contact with you shortly. You are under no obligation, and we will be happy to answer any questions that you may have.
How old do I have to be to become an umpire?
There is no official minimum age or cut off to become an umpire. As a guide, we would usually recommend junior umpires be a minimum of approximately one to two years older than the age group in which they officiate – however this depends on the experience and maturity of the individual umpire.
How far do Field and Boundary Umpires run during an AFL Sydney game?
Across four quarters of play, an AFL Field Umpire usually averages 7-13 kilometres of running. Over the same period, an AFL Boundary Umpire would usually average 9-15 kilometres.
What is involved with the training to become a Field Umpire?
A Sydney AFL Premier Division Field or Boundary Umpire trains at least twice a week. Premier Division Grade Goal Umpire trains at least once a week. During these sessions there is a focus on physical fitness (track running) and specific skills required to umpire (bouncing and positioning). There is also a theory component, ensuring that the umpire is equipped with all the knowledge needed to umpire each week.
I’m not much of a runner, does that mean I can’t umpire?
Not at all! Umpiring accommodates people of varying ages, experience and running ability. We have a very diverse group which includes ex-players, umpire’s with pre-existing injuries or ongoing injuries and simply those that enjoy a run without the physical contact!
